Capoeira at Jungle Bar
Sitting on the concrete floor of Jungle Bar in Itacare, sipping on a freshly squeezed passionfruit caipirinha, and enamored with the Capoeira Roda unfolding before my eyes, I flashed back to the very reason I ended up in this marvelous place. Capoeira itself was what originally sparked my interest in Brazil years ago. I joined a group in Boston during my first year of University and was hooked after the very first class, not only because of the art form but also because of the people. The energy and culture the martial art exudes is contagious, and the people welcomed me with open arms into their wondrous world rich with heritage. Capoeira possesses the discipline & agility of dance, the intensity of live instruments, the soul of song, and the playfulness of a game all in one, which makes it hard not to adore.
Here I am, finally in this amazing country, in a tiny coastal village getting to experience the roots and raw culture of what inspired me to visit in the first place. My mind spun with delight at realizing how life comes around full circle, even when you don’t intent it to.
